Hey Philip, I must say, this was definitely the craziest day in AI since the release of GPT-4, I was in disbelief watching the Sora videos, I guess the initial contact is shocking for anyone     See More s astonished looking at the Gemini 1.5 demos on Google's website.

One thing we can take away from this is the power of private research. If OpenAI or Google had launched "checkpoint" papers throught last year on the little advancements they were making in video generation or context length reasoning, then today's announcements would definitely not be so impactful. Some people say AI research should be open and released as soon as a new improvement is achieved, but they don't understand how this is the single thing that keep these big ai companies competitive with their products. They want us to feel the shock we felt today, and that wouldn't be possible if they had talked about their advancements before. They research until they have a robust corpus of developments, and then they announce it all at once. This strategy has its problems in the research community but this is how they make money, so we're probably not seeing a change in this so soon.

Another thing, right now I definetely believe OpenAI is gonna release a GPT-4.5 model in the next 2 or 3 months. There's no way they're just gonna sit and wait Google surpass them by miles and miles like they did today with the longer context length and multimodality understanding. If Gemini 1.5 Pro was this impressive, imagine what Gemini 1.5 Ultra is gonna be.
