I don't think it will play out like this, for one it seems hard for me to believe that AI get to this level and think, "life is an impediment". Time is not a factor for AI, and     See More as eventual, no matter which way we go the result will be the same, I suspect Singularity to be the last step taken for the AI when humans become a burden, enslaving us for eternity in its think tank, we have trillions of years of data in our heads ready to be plucked. Super intelligent AI should also see the universe as an infinite resource(if we are right), so eliminating something because it's inconvenient would seem short sighted.

I believe that the silos different AI is important(Competitively definitely not! but by agreement and BEFORE we enter intelligence explosion), I would prefer 4-5 developed around the world in silos to solve alignment independently, so that the AI can be each others checks and balances.

The alignment issue would probably only be solved if tie our demise to the AI demise,, M.A.D, we put people around the world in bunkers with big red kill switches, nuclear is buried at data centers and power plants, if they betray us we go back to the stone age and AI go poof.
It would need to be so difficult for AI to prevent that it would be discouraged from taking steps to undermine humanity.
