I'm Michaël, an i     See More artist from Montreal. I just released "Does It Change Anything?" - a song that uses my coming-out story to explore transparency in AI music.
Here's my reality: I write every word from my actual life. Every emotion is real. Every creative decision is mine. But I can't afford studio musicians. AI gave me a voice to share my story. And now I'm terrified I'll be lumped in with Udio's deceptive practices and lose everything.
Your point about Udio giving no warning? That's my nightmare. I've been transparent from day one - labeling everything, disclosing AI usage, putting my real name behind it. But will that even matter? Or will all AI-assisted music just get banned together?
I WANT artists compensated. Rights holders deserve to be paid. But where does that leave independent artists who use AI transparently as a tool, not as a replacement for human creativity?
Your dystopian scenario about copyrighting every note combination keeps me up at night. Because I'm not a company with lawyers. I'm just one person trying to share something real.

What happens to artists like me in this new world?

I find this really bizarre ... It is like saying a published author owns the rights to the 26 letters of the alphabet. The AI trained on copyright material therefore AI owes copyright holders is total nonsense. What is a question often asked of human musicians or bands? Who were some of your biggest "     See More ? Then the Beatles mention various R&B singers or group etc etc. By the AI owes us logic, that means the R&B artists should be able to sue the Beatles for self-admitted training on their work. Humans "train" on all the music they hear, just as AI does, but when they do it, it's called "being influenced" and when AI does it, it's called theft.    See Less
I don't understand why musicians are so upset about AI if it truly can't replace live sound. If you can play guitar or piano, keep doing it. You still have clients. I think AI is pri     See More interest to songwriters. Besides, live musicians could perform these songs live and make money from it too. By the way, most famous singers can't write a song. So why are they so popular and no one criticizes them? And I, as a songwriter who uses AI as a tool to bring my ideas and lyrics to life, am subject to criticism that I've done nothing.    See Less

A most pertinent inquiry, wouldn't you agree? At what point does artificial intelligence declare a violation of intellectual property – specifically the unauthorized appropriation of c     See More lexemes, be they of Latin or even Klingon derivation? One could postulate: Should I incorporate a rank, such as 'Captain' or 'Lieutenant', might one accuse me of employing artificial intelligence to feign militaristic bearing through illicit use of copyrighted terminology? The term 'Captain', I believe, remains unencumbered by such restrictions. My assertion is one of independent creation – a deliberate, exhaustive quest for each Latinate iteration, augmented by selected neologisms. Projecting this paradigm onto musical composition elucidates a conundrum. Hypnothetically, I possess a sonic instrument of six strings. By modulating the signal matrix, I can manipulate its sonic output; percussive elements could be sourced manually; lyrical content could be of original composition. While AI assistance is possible, its utilization remains elusive. The dilemma of proving or disproving AI involvement lacks a logical solution. Perhaps a live performance before you by myself, or even my band would prove useful. Then the same could be asked for the words that I speak. Is this course of action desirable? Are these considerations not logical?
Has a copyright been levied against a military rank, perhaps? Or have I erred in utilizing terms such as 'Vulcan' or 'Klingon', borrowing from the Star Trek milieu? Are these terminologies copyrighted?    See Less

As inspiration, I listen to 100 songs from that genre to     See More for it, then write my own song based on the styles I heard. That is in no way a violation. AI has done the same thing. There are no violations. Music companies are simply lashing out at a new industry in the same way they lashed out at mp3 music sharing business models in the early 2000s. In fact, real music artists have been doing the exact same thing for literally decades...listen to some songs, then write their own based on elements of various songs they heard. There is no copyright issue. As I said, the AI industry needs better legal representation to really dig in and specialize in this new space of uncharted territory.    See Less
