In the early days, programmers did develop their own algorithms, but as time went on this became quite inefficient. The knowledge of what library for what tasks and how to use these libraries... this was the required knowledge. In fact, today one can be a pretty effective software developer, while not even knowing all the intricate details of the programming language you are using.
30 Years ago, you could call yourself a decent computer programmer if you knew every function of the K+R standard library. These days, dream on... there are gigabytes of libraries which can solve your problems... if you only knew they existed already.
Of course vibe coding will be the future. Sure it will result in crappy inefficient code... even the most simple programs take megabytes on your HD and nothing less than the latest CPU will run it fast enough... but this did not happen overnight... for decades already, programs have become larger and slower, doing exactly the same thing they did previously.    See Less

I can’t get ChatGPT to give me the same answer     See More �m a software engineer in the industrial controls industry and I can tell you that no client is going anywhere near expecting or allowing AI to write any kind of software that has to do with machine, safety or machines in general. Sure companies are integrating AI services into their platforms to help with monotonous tasks. But the idea that someone is gonna sit down and spend a few hours talking to Claude in English to produce black box software that can be trusted, not follow human readable architecture but just mysterious spaghetti that we will trust, even running unit testing.. it’s not gonna fly. It is about as close by as us connecting ChatGPT up to the cockpit of an airliner and firing the pilots. Now to the extent that “AI” can create human readable code in the structures that make sense to humans such that we can clearly see it all and visually verify it, sure, that’s a help. But I see no evidence that getting AI to start with a “thing” and expanding on that “thing” in an intelligent way is happening at all. The more additional inputs I give to AI the messier its output gets.    See Less
