First it was: It's going to lead to AGI, which will autonomously do most work better than humans and generate so much wealth and abundance it changes/saves the world and accelerates ever     See More and domain it touches so that things speed up more and more. And don't worry, because fair and equitable economic transformation will just naturally and necessarily flow from them.

Then it was: Well, it's still going to do that, but in the mean time, we need a way for it to survive profitably until it can, so we're going to start saying existing hardware will depreciate more slowly in order to make our books look better ... even though if we were actually close to our stated goal, things should depreciate into obsolescence faster, not more slowly ... but let's just set that aside. Also, we will only consider ad revenue as a very last resort!

Now it's: We're going to do ad revenue, and also, we're going to take a cut from AI-assisted discoveries, because we are still looking for a way to actually monetize/productize this supposedly revolutionary technology that will transform/save the world, are spending huge amounts in capex to brute force our way there, and still aren't there yet, or even really close to it as it's traditionally been understood, or by our own charter definition of it.

Look, I want AGI to happen ... but these do not sound like the actions of people who really believe they have the golden path to the Do Most Labor Better Than Humans Highly Autonomously machine we've been told they do. I don't see OpenAI as relevant from an Enterprise point of view, they don't have the best models and they don't have full stack or the researcher google has. I can see possible voluntary and mutually beneficial deals, like a pharma company getting somewhat cheaper API tokens in exchange for portion of profit from any new drug (so AI impact     See More need to be investigated).
I think the current outrage stems from the idea that no such deal exists, and OpenAI lawyers suddenly sue the pharma, basically extorting it by abusing current intellectual ownership laws, which would be very hypocritical.    See Less
