That decision led to huge backlash for OpenAI with many customers switching to Claude. OpenAI already looks like the bad guys here, and siding further with the pentagon would obviously not be in their best interest.

If OpenAI truly intended to back the red lines proposed by Anthropic, they would not have taken the deal. Instead, they reneged on their supposed "principles" the moment they had the opportunity to capitalize on an advantage.

Seems to me, the most honest reading of the situation is that Sam Altman is trying to have his cake and eat it too.    See Less
